Center of Competencies in Circular Biomaterials

About

From waste to functional materials

We create biomaterials from construction and biomass waste for the restoration of degraded soils, environmental remediation, and sustainable construction. The center’s team, bringing together over 20 specialists, develops biochar and hydrochar, hydrogel and mineral composites, as well as living building materials for 3D printing and green infrastructure.

Our goal is to turn waste into functional materials that promote decarbonization, ecosystem restoration, and increased resilience of urbanized territories.

Research activities

Six research directions

Sustainable building materials

Eco-friendly materials made from biomass and recycled waste, including composites based on plant fibers and biopolymers.

Waste processing

We convert construction and biomass waste into biofuel, bio-hydrochar and building materials, minimizing waste volume and introducing closed-loop production cycles.

Life cycle and sustainability assessment

We conduct LCA, sustainability assessment and techno-economic analysis of technologies and products, determining their environmental efficiency, resource costs and scalability potential.

3D printing of materials

3D printing methods using biomaterials and recycled components — complex structures with minimal waste.

Machine learning

AI/ML algorithms help optimize materials development and predict their properties in environmental and engineering research.

Remediation of contaminated soils

We develop biochar, hydrochar and biocomposites with microorganisms for cleaning soils from organic and inorganic pollutants, including PAHs and heavy metals.

Digital and assessment solutions

LCA — environmental efficiency assessment

Determining the carbon footprint, resource costs, and environmental impacts at various stages of the technology's life cycle.

ML — data analysis

Identifying patterns, predicting material properties, and optimizing formulations and process parameters.

TEA — economic efficiency and scalability assessment

Analysis of CAPEX/OPEX, production costs, and the conditions for transitioning from lab-scale development to industrial implementation.

Integrating LCA, ML, and TEA provides a comprehensive assessment of the environmental, technological, and economic efficiency of the solutions being developed.

PhD, Leading Researcher at Southern Federal University

The Center was established as part of the strategic academic leadership program “Priority‑2030”. Dr. Kravchenko’s scientific work is related to the development of “smart” materials for sustainable construction and soil reclamation.

Her research covers: optimization of production processes for bio‑ and hydrochars for sustainable waste processing; carbon sequestration; creation of materials with a fixed phase change transition for thermoregulation of media; processing of various types of waste into carbon‑capture materials.

Under her leadership, the Center’s team is working on projects aimed at transforming waste into useful products for soil restoration and sustainable construction.
